FG Aids Plateau Farmers Affected by Swine Fever Outbreak

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has initiated support for pig farmers in Plateau State impacted by the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF). The ministry expressed sympathy for the farmers' losses and reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to containment efforts by providing disinfectants, biosecurity materials, and essential supplies.

A delegation conducted surveillance on various farms, including Enechangs Piggery Farm, Tabitha Jahota Shukrit Farm, Susan Sunday Alison Farm, and Da Mancha Integrated Farms Limited, which has remained free of ASF. Dr.

Yakubu Yanet Ago, Chief Veterinary Officer and National Programme Coordinator for ASF, stated that the visit aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The assessment aimed to evaluate the outbreak's extent and enhance collaboration on disease control.

Dr. Ago directed the Federal Response Team to intensify support and engage with affected farmers.

He noted that compensation schemes for ASF are largely unavailable in Africa, with Côte d’Ivoire being an exception. The Federal Government allocates annual budgetary provisions for the prevention and control of major transboundary animal diseases.
