Nigeria Suspends Christian Pilgrimages to Israel Amid Conflict

The Federal Government of Nigeria has suspended Christian pilgrimages to Israel in response to escalating security concerns stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This decision was announced by the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), which emphasized the necessity of prioritizing the safety and comfort of Nigerian pilgrims.

The suspension is effective immediately, following intensified conflict in the region, particularly after a reported strike by the United States against Iran, which resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader. The NCPC noted that air travel across the Middle East has been disrupted, with several countries shutting their airspace, leading to the cancellation of multiple international flights.

The suspension will remain in effect until the security situation in the region improves. Annually, thousands of Nigerian Christians travel to biblical sites in Israel, including Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Nazareth, as part of their religious pilgrimage, which is often coordinated and subsidized by state governments.
