Nigeria's Power Minister Tegbe Unveils 300 Container Upgrade

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, announced plans to deploy and install 300 containers of critical power equipment to upgrade the nation's transmission infrastructure. This announcement was made during a media briefing in Abuja.

The initiative aims to deepen grid stabilization along key corridors, including Lagos, Enugu-Port Harcourt, and Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, while conducting technical audits to identify weak points for investment. Tegbe noted the contradiction of unfinished power projects despite critical equipment being stranded in storage.

He mentioned that new transformers have been commissioned at various locations, unlocking a total of 912MW of power. Additionally, N1.23 trillion has been raised to address a backlog of N3.3 trillion in power-sector debt.

The Minister also referenced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's proposal for a Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) to tackle persistent transmission challenges, highlighting the need for a reliable power supply amidst ongoing grid collapses in 2026.
