FG Plans December Completion for Kaduna-Kano Railway

The Federal Government has announced that the Kaduna-Zaria-Kano railway route is set to be completed and operational by December. Funsho Adebiyi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, made this statement on Monday in Abuja during the 19th National Council on Transportation.

He emphasized the need to expand the railway network to alleviate the heavy reliance on road transportation, which currently sees about 98% of Nigerians depending on it. Adebiyi noted that this overdependence has led to excessive traffic and strain on road infrastructure.

He mentioned that several railway routes, including Port Harcourt-Aba, Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kaduna, and Warri-Itakpe, are already operational. The completion of the Kaduna-Zaria-Kano route is part of a broader initiative to shift freight transportation from roads to rail.

Additionally, Adebiyi indicated that work on the Kano-Daura-Katsina route is also advanced, with a completion target of December, while the Katsina-Jibia-Maradi route is expected to be ready by the same period next year.
