Nigeria to Launch 90,000km Fibre Optic Network Soon

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to commence the rollout of a 90,000-kilometre fibre optic network across the country within weeks, aimed at improving broadband connectivity and advancing Nigeria’s digital economy. Dr Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, made this announcement on Tuesday after briefing President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

Tijani confirmed that all funding and contractual processes for the project have been completed, and deployment will begin shortly. He stated that the network will span every state, geopolitical zone, local government area, and ward, significantly enhancing internet access and service quality nationwide.

Tijani expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for reforms that have bolstered the communications sector, noting that the sector's contribution to Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product has increased from between 16-18% to nearly 21% since the current administration took office. Additionally, the government plans to deploy approximately 3,700 telecommunications towers starting in October to provide coverage for over 20 million Nigerians in underserved communities.
