Nigeria to Review Temporary Shea Nut Export Ban

The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Jumok Oduwol, announced plans to review the temporary ban on raw shea nut exports, which was implemented on August 26, 2025. This six-month ban aimed to promote local processing and reduce the export of unprocessed raw materials, aligning with the broader goal of transforming Nigeria into a global hub for refined shea products.

Oduwol emphasized the government's recognition of citizens' rights to earn a livelihood and contribute to national development. The review process will involve consultations with stakeholders across the shea value chain, and the government expects to announce its decision regarding the ban's extension or deferment within the relevant departments.

The Nigerian shea industry, which captures nearly 40% of the global market, is projected to earn $1.65 billion during the ban period. Stakeholders, including NACCIMA Chairman Dele Kelvin Oy, have called for clarity on government policies regarding the shea nut industry.
