FG Launches Strategy for Sustainable University Funding

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a new strategy to ensure sustainable funding for universities through the National Universities Advancement Programme (NUAP). Dr.

Olatunji Alausa disclosed this during a keynote address at the close ceremony of the NUAP training for university officials. The program aims to build stronger university institutions capable of competing in the global knowledge economy by establishing strategic partnerships and engaging alumni.

The initiative is designed to complement rather than replace government funding, creating additional avenues for research funding, innovative scholarships, and infrastructure development. The Federal Government remains committed to supporting higher education and developing alternative funding sources.

The Nigeria Higher Education Foundation (NHEF) is also involved in strengthening the higher education ecosystem. The NUAP was launched following a memorandum of agreement signed by the Federal Ministry of Education in January 2026, marking a milestone in equipping the Nigerian university system to strengthen alumni relations and fundraising efforts for long-term sustainability.
