FGC Kano Alumni Protest Land Concession Proposal

Alumni of the Federal Government College (FGC) Kano, represented by the FGC Kano Old Students Association (FGKOSA), have rejected a proposal to concede 30 hectares of school land for a public-private partnership project. The protest coincided with the laying of the foundation for 18 new critical infrastructure assets by Professor Suwaiba Sa'id Ahmad Mondai, the Minister of State for Education.

The alumni expressed concerns that the land concession, which involves a land swap deal with a private company, would divert educational land into commercial real estate ventures, undermining the institution's legacy. Shoyinka Shodunk, the national president of FGKOSA, emphasized the importance of protecting the sanctity of the school, which has been a symbol of excellence for 53 years.

The alumni have invested billions in infrastructure and academic programs without seeking a return of school land. They urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to cancel the proposed concession to safeguard the future of education in Nigeria.
