FIDA Rescues Abandoned Infant in Rivers State Shrine

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Rivers State, led by Chairperson Tamunoibuemi Life Georg, rescued a two-week-old male infant abandoned in front of a local shrine in Abua Odual Local Government Area on June 14, 2026. The organization received credible information about the abandonment and quickly escalated the situation, collaborating with the police to ensure the child's safety.

Preliminary findings revealed that the infant's mother, a young woman, left the baby due to a lack of basic necessities, while the infant's grandfather allegedly discarded the baby at the shrine. FIDA provided immediate medical assessment and support at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, ensuring the infant's stability and the mother's ability to breastfeed.

FIDA is seeking financial support to cover medical costs and welfare assistance for both the mother and child, emphasizing the need for community support in addressing issues of poverty and family breakdown in Nigeria.
