FIFA Mandates Female Coaches for Women's Tournaments

FIFA has introduced a new regulation requiring every team in women's competitions to appoint a female head coach, aimed at strengthening representation on the touchline. This decision was ratified during FIFA's council meeting on Thursday and will apply to youth and senior tournaments, including club competitions, starting in 2024.

The policy is part of a broader initiative to address the male dominance in coaching roles, as highlighted by FIFA Chief Football Officer Jill Ellis, who emphasized the urgent need for action. The rule mandates that teams must have at least two women on the coaching bench, including one woman in the medical staff.

Additionally, FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that the 2026 Men's World Cup will proceed as planned, despite uncertainties regarding Iran's participation due to ongoing conflicts. The Iranian Football Association President Mehdi Taj has called for discussions with FIFA about potential venue switches, while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum indicated that her country is prepared to host fixtures.
