Nigeria Drops to 4th in Africa in Latest FIFA Rankings

In the latest FIFA men's world rankings released on Monday, Nigeria's national football team, known as the Super Eagles, has fallen to 4th place among African nations and 26th globally. This drop is attributed to their absence from competitive action in June, where they suffered two defeats in friendly matches against Portugal.

Egypt's impressive campaign in the 2026 World Cup, where they reached the Round of 16 before narrowly losing to Argentina, has propelled them to 3rd place in Africa. Morocco remains the highest-ranked African team, advancing to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Senegal is ranked 2nd in Africa despite a three-place drop in the global standings. Nigeria's failure to qualify for the World Cup marks their second consecutive absence, following a playoff loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Nigeria Football Federation's appeal regarding player eligibility during the campaign was dismissed. The next FIFA men's world ranking is scheduled for release on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
