FIFA Sanctions Nigeria and DR Congo Over Qualifier Clash

FIFA has imposed sanctions on both the Nigeria Football Federation and the DR Congo Football Federation after a contentious World Cup qualifier match held in November 2025, where Nigeria's national team, known as the Super Eagles, lost to DR Congo 4-3 in a penalty shootout. The Nigerian federation was fined 1,000 Swiss francs for crowd-related misconduct, specifically for objects thrown from the stands, which violated FIFA's disciplinary code.

In contrast, DR Congo faced a heavier fine of 5,000 Swiss francs for using a laser pointer during the match, contravening FIFA regulations. Following the match, Nigeria's head coach, Eric Chell, publicly criticized the officiating and alleged that spiritual practices influenced the outcome.

Nigeria has filed a formal protest against DR Congo, claiming that the Congolese federation misled FIFA regarding player eligibility. Nigeria submitted a petition on December 15, 2025, requesting a full investigation into the eligibility of several players who participated in the match.

FIFA has yet to release a final decision on Nigeria's protest.
