Sonai Kartal demonstrated her resilience by defeating former Australian Open champion Madison Keys in a thrilling third-round match at the Indian Wells tournament. After losing the first set 2-6, Kartal rallied to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-3, completing the comeback in just two hours.

The British number two, currently ranked 54th, had previously struggled with a back injury during the match, requiring medical attention and saving a match point. Kartal expressed her determination, stating that she feels capable of beating anyone on a good day.

This victory is significant as it marks her second consecutive fourth-round appearance at the Indian Wells tournament, following her debut in the WTA 1,000 event last year. She reached a career-high ranking of 44 in 2025.

In the next round, Kartal will face Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, the reigning Australian Open champion, highlighting the challenges ahead as she prioritizes her recovery.
