Tolu Fagbure Critiques Funke Akindele's Directing Skills

On October 3, 2026, film critic and public commentator Tolu Fagbure posted a video on Instagram where he criticized Nollywood actress and director Funke Akindele, questioning her directorial skills. Fagbure, who acknowledged his previous comments were "condescendingly brutal," stated that Akindele's filmmaking approach indicates a limited understanding of directing, claiming she "only understands format." He also raised concerns about her co-directing credits, suggesting they reflect a gap in her technical knowledge.

Funke Akindele is recognized as one of Nollywood's biggest box office draws, with numerous blockbuster films to her credit. Fagbure's remarks ignited a divisive response among fans and observers, particularly given that he admitted to never having met Akindele personally, which led to criticisms regarding the validity of his assessment.

The comments section of his post quickly filled with reactions, pointing out the contradictions in his argument.
