NBC Appeals Court Ruling on Broadcasting Fines

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has requested the Court of Appeal in Abuja to permit a fresh appeal against a January 10, 2024 judgment by Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court. This judgment restrained the NBC from imposing fines on broadcast stations, specifically a ₦5 million fine on Multichoice Nigeria Limited, TelCom Satellite Limited, Trust-TV Network Limited, and NTA Startimes Limited for allegedly undermining national security by airing documentaries on banditry in Zamfara state.

The NBC's initial appeal was dismissed on June 17, 2026, due to procedural defects in its documentation. In its current motion, filed by lawyer Mr. Dapo Akinosun (SAN), the NBC argues that the judgment threatens broadcasting sanity and raises significant public interest questions regarding its regulatory authority.

The NBC contends that the ruling could weaken the regulatory framework of the broadcasting industry, potentially leading to increased dissemination of false information and public unrest.
