NBC Appeals Court Ruling on Broadcasting Fines

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has requested the Court of Appeal in Abuja to allow a fresh appeal against a Federal High Court judgment that prohibits it from imposing fines on broadcasting stations. This motion follows the Court of Appeal's decision on June 17, 2026, which rejected NBC's earlier appeal as "fundamentally defective." The case originated from a suit by Media Rights Agenda (MRA) regarding fines of ₦5 million imposed on Multichoice Nigeria Limited, TelCom Satellite Limited, Trust-TV Network Limited, and NTA Startimes Limited for allegedly undermining national security by broadcasting documentaries about banditry in Zamfara state.

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia ruled that the NBC lacked the authority to impose such fines. NBC's new appeal seeks to address concerns about its regulatory powers and the potential negative impact of the judgment on broadcasting standards in Nigeria.
