Fire Alarm Scare at Team Nigeria's Hotel in Glasgow

On Sunday afternoon, Team Nigeria athletes and officials were evacuated from their Maldron Hotel base in Central Glasgow, Scotland, following a fire alarm incident. The alarm sounded while some athletes and officials were having lunch and others were preparing to attend the closing ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games at the SEC Armadillo Hydro Stadium.

The evacuation caused panic, with some individuals rushing out inappropriately dressed and others forgetting to wear shoes. Nigerian journalists conducting interviews in the hotel lobby also abandoned their work to seek safety.

Shortly after the alarm, a hotel official explained that the smoke detected by the hotel’s smoke detectors was caused by an electric cigarette. The situation was later lightened as some athletes joked about the scare that had briefly put their safety in question.
