Federal Ministry of Works Confirms Imminent Reopening of First Niger Bridge

The Federal Ministry of Works announced that the First Niger Bridge may reopen before the end of the week, pending unforeseen circumstances. Timothy Emenike, the Federal Controller of Works at the Anambra State Field Headquarters, stated that all major construction works have been completed.
The bridge, which connects Onitsha in Anambra State to Asaba in Delta State, was closed from September 7 to 21 for emergency rehabilitation due to vandalized structural components. The closure was extended by one week due to persistent rainfall.
Minister of Works Dave Umahi had previously stated that the bridge would not reopen until all major structural rehabilitation was completed. Emenike noted that while the tarring of the bridge is finished, painting of the railings is ongoing.
He expressed hope that the reopening would alleviate the pressure on motorists diverted to the Second Niger Bridge, which has resulted in longer travel times and increased costs.
