Federal Government Closes First Niger Bridge for Repairs

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the complete shutdown of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, for two weeks, from September 7 to September 21, 2026, to facilitate emergency rehabilitation works. Timothy Emenike, the acting federal controller of works, confirmed the closure in a statement released on September 4.

The bridge, crucial for motorists traveling between Anambra and Delta states, is in a deteriorated state requiring urgent repairs. During a recent visit to Anambra, David Umahi, the Minister of Works, expressed concerns about the bridge's condition, particularly the worn carriageway surface and damage from vandalism.

Emergency maintenance works will be carried out by Messrs SKECC, including milling and replacing the asphalt surface and installing solar-powered streetlights and closed-circuit cameras. Traffic diversion measures will be implemented, directing motorists to use the Second Bridge via Obosi as an alternative route.

The ministry aims to provide a smooth and durable riding surface to alleviate traffic difficulties.
