First Niger Bridge Closed for Emergency Repairs Until Sept 21

The Federal Ministry of Works has fully shut the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, for emergency maintenance and rehabilitation, effective from Monday, September 7, 2026. The closure is anticipated to last until September 21, 2026.

The ministry stated that the intervention was necessary due to the deteriorated condition of the bridge’s carriageway and damage to components caused by vandalism, including parts of the expansion-joint steelwork and stanchion and steel-truss nuts and bolts. The rehabilitation work will involve the removal of the deteriorated asphalt surface and the laying of a new approximately 40mm asphalt wearing course, along with other maintenance and safety measures.

Additionally, the Federal Government plans to install solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras to enhance safety and deter vandalism. Motorists have been directed to use the Second Niger Bridge through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State, during the closure, with traffic diversion arrangements, road signs, safety barriers, and traffic-control personnel deployed to minimize disruption and protect road users and construction workers.
