Argungu Fishing Festival Concludes with Grand Prizes

The 61st Argungu International Fishing Festival concluded on Saturday evening at the traditional fish arena by the Matan Fada River in Argungu, Kebbi State. Established in 1934 to promote peace and friendship, the festival has evolved into a major cultural event attracting participants from across Nigeria and tourists worldwide.

Following Nigeria's civil war, the federal government adopted the festival as a symbol of national unity. The event features various cultural displays, including local wrestling, canoe races, traditional music, and dance.

The 2016 festival was officially recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. After nearly a decade of suspension, the festival was successfully revived by Governor Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu.

Abubakar Usman Maiyama from the local government area emerged as the overall winner with a catch weighing 59 kilograms. Prizes included a car for the first place, a Hajj seat for the second, and motorcycles for the third place winners.

The 2026 edition is expected to attract even more participants.
