Nasarawa State Relocates Residents from Flood-Prone Areas

Princess Margaret Elayo, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources in Nasarawa State, announced plans to relocate residents from high-risk flood areas, particularly in Doma, Toto, and Lafia local government areas, due to annual flooding from the Benue River and its tributaries. This decision follows predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) regarding potential flooding.

Elayo urged the public to avoid dumping refuse in drainage systems and to refrain from constructing structures that could obstruct waterways. She committed to enhancing awareness campaigns to educate the public on flood dangers and the importance of maintaining clean environments to prevent disease outbreaks.

Additionally, Abubakar Moham, Chief Prosecutor at the Ministry, reported the arrest of 106 individuals across the state for violating sanitation laws during a recent sanitation exercise, emphasizing the need for compliance to ensure public health and safety.
