Kano Plans New Drainage Master Plan to Combat Flooding Crisis

Kano plans a new drainage master plan to address flooding issues following heavy downpours that flooded parts of the city. The Commissioner of Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, highlighted the impact of global climate crisis on altered rainfall patterns, leading to increased flooding incidents.

The overwhelmed drainage system was attributed to rapid urban expansion and inadequate channels. The state government is taking steps to mitigate flooding by desilting major drains, supporting community groups in clearing minor drainage, and improving waste management systems.

The focus is on restoring natural buffers like trees along roads to reduce flooding risks in Kano and other affected areas.
