Lassa Fever Outbreak Claims 42 Lives at FMC Jalingo

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jalingo is currently overwhelmed by a Lassa Fever outbreak, which has resulted in 42 deaths from November 2025 to March 2026. Dr.

Abubakar Kirim, head of clinic services at FMC Jalingo, highlighted the ongoing struggle against the virus, noting that 230 suspected cases were reported over five months, with 102 confirmed cases. Out of these, 95 patients were admitted, and 30 were successfully treated and discharged.

The situation is exacerbated by a shortage of medical staff, with three healthcare workers contracting Lassa Fever, including a doctor who succumbed to the disease. Dr.

Kirim emphasized the urgent need for qualified medical personnel to join the fight and called for a massive awareness campaign to educate the public on preventive measures. He warned residents of Jalingo to exercise caution, maintain hygiene, and seek immediate medical attention for symptoms such as fever and bleeding.
