Jewel Howard-Taylor Imprisoned Ahead of Drug Trial

Jewel Howard-Taylor, the former vice president of Liberia, was placed in pre-trial detention on Tuesday at Monrovia Central Prison following her initial court appearance on eight counts related to alleged involvement in an international drug trafficking network. Howard-Taylor, who served as vice president from 2018 to 2024 under President George Weah and was previously a senator from 2006 to 2018, was charged last Wednesday.

The charges are connected to a government crackdown on drug trafficking, particularly following a major cocaine seizure of four tonnes valued at $317 million in July, which she is linked to. Howard-Taylor was arrested at Roberts International Airport near Monrovia.

Her lawyers requested that she not be detained due to her asthma condition, but the court denied this request, stating that only the attorney general can grant compassionate leave. The Alternative National Congress has expressed concerns about the government's focus on opposition figures in drug-related cases.
