Breakthrough Personalized mRNA Vaccine Reduces Melanoma Risk

Results from a large trial of a personalized mRNA vaccine for melanoma, developed by Merck and Moderna, indicate a significant advancement in cancer treatment. The vaccine, administered alongside the immunotherapy drug Keytruda, reduced the risk of melanoma returning or spreading in over 1,000 patients whose tumors had been surgically removed but remained at high risk of recurrence.

Unlike traditional chemotherapy, which can damage healthy tissue, this personalized cancer vaccine targets specific mutations in a patient's tumor, training the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells. Dr. Ryan Sullivan, a melanoma specialist at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, called the findings a major development, while Dr. Julie Gralow, chief medical officer of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, noted the results as a significant advance for mRNA technology in cancer treatment.

The trial showed that patients receiving the vaccine alongside Keytruda had about half the risk of melanoma returning and a 59% lower risk of cancer spreading compared to those receiving Keytruda alone. The ongoing trial will continue to assess overall survival and the technology's effectiveness against other cancers.
