Yoon Suk-yeol Sentenced to Two Years for Political Corruption

On Monday, a Seoul Central District Court sentenced former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol to two years in prison after finding him guilty of unlawfully receiving 14 rounds of opinion poll services valued at approximately 270 million won (equivalent to $180,000) from political broker Myung Tae-kyun between April 2021 and March 2022. The court ruled that these services constituted illegal political donations under South Korean law, as they were not merely acts of political support.

The judgment dismissed arguments from Yoon's legal team, which claimed there was no evidence of a quid pro quo arrangement. This ruling marks a significant departure from a previous court decision involving former First Lady Kim Keon-hee, where insufficient evidence was found to establish a similar arrangement.

Yoon, who is currently facing at least eight separate criminal cases, has the right to appeal the judgment, and his legal team plans to challenge the ruling. His legal troubles have intensified following a series of convictions, including a life sentence related to a failed martial law declaration.
