Abuja Hosts Summer Athletics Competition for Youth

The Development Governance International Foundation (DGIF), led by Chief Executive Officer Dr. Gafar Alawode, in collaboration with the Real Winners Athletics Club, organized a Summer Athletics Competition for young athletes in Abuja. The event took place at the Main Bowl of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and included 134 participants aged 4 to 15 from 13 athletics clubs in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Competitions featured various sprints, including 40m, 60m, 100m, 150m, and 200m, as well as a 4 × 100m mixed relay. Dr. Gafar Alawode emphasized the importance of identifying and nurturing young athletic talent to address the succession gap in Nigerian athletics.

He expressed a commitment to forming partnerships with organizations to expand opportunities for young athletes, aiming for some to be ready for the Olympics in the coming years. Head Coach of Real Winners Athletics Club, Mr. Spencer Kester Shina, called for support from philanthropists and stakeholders to sustain such initiatives.
