Foundation Urges Tinubu to Sign Audit Bill After Delay

The Advokc Foundation, a youth-led civic technology organization, has called on President Bola Tinubu to sign the Federal Audit Service Bill, which has remained unsigned for seven months since passing through the National Assembly. Habib Sheidu, the Foundation's Project Director, stated that the proposed law seeks to repeal the colonial-era Audit Ordinance of 1956, establish an autonomous Federal Audit Service, and strengthen the powers of the Auditor General.

The bill aims to address longstanding weaknesses in Nigeria's audit system, providing the Auditor General with stronger enforcement powers and accountability measures. Sheidu emphasized that the delay in signing the bill sends a negative signal regarding the administration's commitment to governance reform.

The bill was first introduced during the 6th National Assembly (2007-2011) and has faced multiple failed attempts to pass in subsequent assemblies. The current version was introduced in the 10th National Assembly in October 2023 and passed in December 2025.

Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President, has given President Tinubu a seven-day ultimatum to comply with constitutional obligations regarding the bill.
