France Deploys Aircraft Carrier to Mediterranean Amid Iran Tensions

On Tuesday, President Emmanuel Macron announced the deployment of France's flagship aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle, to the Mediterranean amid rising tensions due to the Iran conflict. The carrier, along with its air assets and escort frigates, is set to reach the eastern Mediterranean in approximately ten days.

This decision follows an Iranian drone attack on a British Royal Air Force base in Akrotiri, Cyprus. Macron highlighted the risk of the conflict spilling over into Europe and stated that Iran bears primary responsibility for the situation, citing its nuclear program and support for regional proxies.

The French forces have also deployed additional air defense units and Rafale fighter jets to enhance security in the region. The carrier will contribute to securing airspace over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil transport.

France has previously engaged in defensive actions, including shooting down drones, to protect its interests and allies in the area.
