Francis Duru Critiques Yoruba Dominance in Nollywood

Francis Duru, a veteran Nollywood actor, has sparked controversy by stating that the Yoruba have taken over Nollywood, an industry he attributes to the Igbo tribe's founding. In an interview with Yan Kontent Factory, Duru expressed that the Igbo have become complacent, allowing the Yoruba to dominate the entertainment space.

He emphasized the need for Igbo filmmakers to recognize and seize opportunities, referencing Kenneth Nnebue, who produced the film in 1992 that is considered the origin of the home video industry in Nigeria. Duru criticized Yoruba writers for misrepresenting Igbo identity in their works, citing the Yoruba-produced series Ahamefuna as an example of this misrepresentation.

Duru's comments have ignited a debate online, revealing divisions among Nigerians along tribal and industry lines regarding cultural representation in Nigerian cinema.
