Traditional Ruler Urges Tinubu to Free Nnamdi Kanu

Lawrence Agubuzu, a traditional ruler from Olo Kingdom in Enugu State, called on President Bola Tinubu to either release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), or return him to Kenya, where he was arrested. Speaking on Tuesday during a goodwill message at the 2026 National Traditional Religious Leaders Summit held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, Agubuzu highlighted that Kanu's ongoing detention fuels agitation among the youth in the southeast.

He criticized the government for not addressing the truth regarding Kanu's situation, stating that the country cannot progress under such circumstances. Agubuzu also expressed disappointment over Tinubu's absence during the summit and mentioned the need for traditional rulers to work on the grievances of the youth.

Kanu has faced multiple legal challenges since his first arrest in 2015 on treason charges, leading to his current life sentence in Sokoto prison after being convicted on seven counts related to terrorism by the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 20, 2025.
