G-100 Coalition Pushes for Unity Among Opposition Ahead of 2027

Renewed efforts to unite former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi in a single opposition platform ahead of the 2027 presidential election are being led by the G-100, a coalition of opposition politicians. This initiative aims to consolidate major opposition parties to present a stronger challenge to President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, discussions about a single presidential candidate have become challenging, as supporters of both Atiku and Obi are reluctant to abandon their presidential ambitions. This disagreement is expected to be a key topic at the August 31 Summit of Opposition Parties organized by the G-100.

The coalition has engaged various opposition parties, including the ADC, NDC, APM, SDP, PRP, and a faction of the PDP led by Tanimu Turaki. The G-100 is advocating for cooperation to avoid splitting the opposition vote, but the question of who would receive the presidential ticket remains a significant hurdle.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that the parties have concluded their nomination processes and are preparing for the election timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
