Senator Shehu Buba Umar Faces Terrorism Allegations

Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing the Bauchi South Senatorial District, is facing serious allegations of involvement in banditry, financing terrorism, and promoting insurgents in Northern Nigeria. These accusations, which have surfaced from various sources, include claims made by Bauchi State Governor Bala Muhammed regarding Umar's sponsorship of individuals with known terror ties for the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage.

Umar has defended his actions, stating that the individuals were selected based on recommendations from traditional rulers. In September 2026, a boy named Hassan released viral videos alleging Umar's collaboration with bandit networks, including providing military training access to the brother of bandit kingpin Dogo Gide.

Additionally, Abubakar Idris, a suspected terrorist arrested in August 2024, reportedly implicated Umar. Umar has denied all allegations, labeling them as baseless and politically motivated, and has threatened legal action against those spreading the videos.

The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria has called for a thorough investigation, while grassroots movements in his district have initiated a petition to recall him.
