Diezani Alison-Madueke's UK Trial Begins with Witnesses

The trial of Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum, began with witness testimonies being taken virtually in a UK court. Justice James Omotosho presided over the proceedings, which were conducted under the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act 2018.

Four witnesses, whose names were withheld, commenced their testimonies at 11 AM Nigerian time at Southwark Crown Court. The trial is expected to last between 10 to 12 weeks, with significant penalties if convicted under the UK Bribery Act.

Alison-Madueke, who served as the first female Minister of Petroleum in Nigeria from 2010 to 2015 and was the first woman to preside over OPEC from 2014 to 2015, faces six charges, including five counts of accepting bribes and one count of conspiracy to commit bribery. Reports indicate she allegedly received at least £100,000 in cash and other benefits during her time in office.

The trial is set to continue with additional witness testimonies scheduled.
