NEDC's Mission to Rebuild Nigeria's North-East

The North East Development Commission (NEDC), established in 2017 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, is tasked with rebuilding Nigeria's North-East, which has faced severe devastation due to the Boko Haram insurgency. The conflict has resulted in approximately 350,000 deaths and displaced 2.5 million people, with 8.4 million in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

The NEDC's mandate extends beyond physical reconstruction; it aims to restore livelihoods and rebuild institutions to instill hope among affected populations. The commission has initiated the North East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan (NESDMP) to address the estimated $9 billion in damages.

It oversees numerous projects across six states—Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Taraba, Bauchi, and Gombe—executing thousands of housing units and infrastructure projects, including roads and schools. The commission's efforts have led to the gradual return of internally displaced persons and improvements in healthcare and education, with Governor Babagana Umara Zulum acknowledging its critical role in the recovery process.
