Nigeria's Sports Community Mourns Loss of Legends

The Nigerian sports community is in mourning following the deaths of prominent figures in football. Henry Nwosu, a former Super Eagles midfielder and the youngest member of Nigeria's 1980 Africa Cup of Nations squad, passed away at the age of 62 on March 14, 2026, at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after five days in intensive care.

His former teammate, Segun Odegbami, announced his death, praising Nwosu's vision and contributions to Nigerian football. Adegboy Onigbinde, aged 88, also passed away on March 9, 2026.

He was a respected figure in Nigerian football, having led Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup and coached the Green Eagles in the early 1980s. Tributes poured in from various officials, including the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Sports Commission, recognizing their legacies.

Other notable losses include veteran sports journalist Niyi Oyelek, who died on March 3, 2026, and Dunkwu Chamberlain, who passed away on March 7, 2026.
