11 Nigerian States Alerted for Lagdo Dam Water Release

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued an alert to residents in 11 Nigerian states concerning the imminent release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon. This alert was disclosed during a flood simulation exercise conducted by NEMA on August 23, aimed at enhancing preparedness and response to potential flooding.

The initial discharge rate from the dam is expected to be 100 cubic meters per second (m³/s), which could increase to 1000 m³/s depending on inflow from the Garoua River. NEMA’s director-general Zubaida Umar, represented by Air Commodore B.

The planned water releases will be gradual, ceasing when there is a reduction in reservoir inflow. NEMA has urged states such as Adamawa, Delta, and Rivers to implement preparedness measures to mitigate potential flooding impacts.
