NEMA Monitors Cameroon Dam Amid Flood Risks for 2026

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is closely monitoring the water level in Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam due to the risk of flooding along the River Benue. This monitoring is part of NEMA's proactive measures for the 2026 flood season, as detailed in its scorecard for July and August 2026 submitted to the Office of the National Security Adviser.

NEMA has intensified coordination with federal and state institutions, strengthened monitoring of high-risk areas, and sustained public sensitization on flood safety. The agency is disseminating flood early-warning information and advisories in collaboration with State Emergency Management Agencies and other stakeholders.

NEMA also refuted social media claims regarding an imminent collapse of the Kagini Dam in Kaduna, confirming no immediate threat exists. The agency's Director-General, Zubaida Umar, activated the National Emergency Operations Centre in August to enhance coordination and data management for climate-induced emergencies.

NEMA has conducted flood simulation exercises in Calabar and participated in joint exercises in Adamawa State to test emergency response procedures.
