G4 Nations Endorse Africa's Bid for UN Security Council Seats

The Foreign Ministers of the G4 countries—Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, German Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu—expressed support for Africa's demand for enhanced representation in the United Nations Security Council, including permanent membership. This position was articulated in a joint statement following their meeting in New York on the margins of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

The G4 ministers welcomed the African Group’s reform model presented during the 80th session of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on Security Council reform. They criticized the current 15-member Security Council structure as outdated and ineffective, calling for its expansion to improve representation for under-represented regions, particularly Africa.

The African Union advocates for at least two permanent seats for Africa with full privileges. The G4 ministers expressed concern over the lack of progress in negotiations for reform over the past 18 years.
