Gabon Suspends Facebook, TikTok Over Hate Speech Concerns

The Gabon Media Regulator announced the suspension of social media platforms Facebook and TikTok on a Wednesday, citing the need to prevent content that could incite conflict and spread hate. Spokesman Jean Claude Mendom stated that the decision was made to protect human dignity, public morals, and the stability of the Republic's institutions.

The regulator highlighted issues such as the spread of false information, cyberbullying, and unauthorized disclosure of personal data as reasons for the suspension. This action comes in the context of rising social unrest in Gabon, particularly following the election of President Brice Oligui Nguema, who is facing challenges including a teachers' strike and threats of further protests from civil servants.

The suspension will remain in effect until further notice, although the regulator emphasized that freedom of expression, including the right to criticize, remains a fundamental right in Gabon.
