Uganda Shuts Down Internet Ahead of Presidential Election for Security Reasons

The Ugandan government has ordered a nationwide shutdown of public internet access and certain mobile services ahead of the presidential election. The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) instructed mobile network operators and internet service providers to suspend public internet services starting from January 13, 2026, until further notice.

The move aims to mitigate the rapid spread of online misinformation, disinformation, electoral fraud risks, and prevent incitement of violence. The shutdown covers various platforms, including social media, web browsing, video streaming, and messaging applications, while ensuring access to essential systems.

This measure is to safeguard public confidence and national security during the election period.
