Gabon Suspends Social Media Amid Rising Tensions

Gabon has announced the suspension of social media platforms until further notice, citing the need to address content that could fuel societal divisions and conflict. The announcement was made by spokesman Jean Claude Mendom, who highlighted concerns over inappropriate, defamatory, and hate-filled content that undermines public morals and social cohesion.

The government also mentioned issues related to the spread of false information, cyberbullying, and unauthorized disclosure of personal data as additional reasons for the suspension. This measure restricts freedom of expression, including the right to comment and criticize, which remains a fundamental right.

The decision comes less than a year after President Brice Oligui Nguema took office during a period marked by social unrest, including teacher strikes and threats of industrial action from civil servants regarding poor working conditions.
