Gates Foundation Promotes AI for Nigeria's Development

The Gates Foundation has initiated a challenge aimed at encouraging Nigerian innovators to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) for addressing significant development issues in the country. During the launch, Uch Amaonwu, the Country Director of the Gates Foundation in Nigeria, stressed the importance of creating locally relevant solutions rather than passively adopting technology developed elsewhere.

He highlighted that AI should be seen as a tool to tackle real challenges faced by Nigerians, such as climate volatility in agriculture and healthcare delivery. Dr. Bosun Tijani from the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy noted that AI is central to the future competitiveness of Nigeria's economy, emphasizing the need for broad-based partnerships to drive technological transformation.

The initiative aims to move Nigeria's AI ecosystem beyond isolated pilot projects to large-scale deployment, ensuring that technological advancements translate into improved livelihoods for citizens.
