Nigeria Secures $500 Million from Gavi for Healthcare

Nigeria has received an approval of nearly US$500 million from Gavi, the vaccine alliance, to support vaccines and primary healthcare initiatives from 2026 to 2030. This funding follows high-level discussions between Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, and Gavi Chief Executive Officer, Dr.

Sania Nishtar, in Abuja. The allocation, approved under the Gavi 6.0 programme, aims to enhance routine immunization, sustain polio eradication, expand HPV vaccination, strengthen primary healthcare services, and improve long-term vaccine financing.

Professor Pate emphasized the importance of this funding for effective planning and delivery of life-saving vaccines to children and vulnerable populations. He noted a significant increase in quarterly visits to primary healthcare centers, from about 10 million in 2023 to over 45 million.

Additionally, Pate welcomed a US$600 million pledge from the United States government to Gavi, highlighting the collaborative efforts among Gavi, WHO, UNICEF, World Bank, and other partners in supporting Nigeria's health sector reforms.
