Germany's $2.3bn Siemens Power Deal Dormant Until Tinubu Revived It in Nigeria

The $2.3 billion Siemens power deal between Nigeria and Germany, originally conceived during former President Muhammadu Buhari's administration, remained largely inactive until President Bola Tinubu's tenure. The deal aims to overhaul Nigeria's transmission and distribution infrastructure to enhance grid stability and increase power capacity.

Siemens plans to ramp up capacity to 7,000 megawatts by 2021, 11,000 MW by 2023, and ultimately reach 25,000 MW by 2025. Germany emphasizes the importance of diversifying energy sources and reducing reliance on hydrocarbons for long-term energy security.

Nigeria, with vast gas reserves, faces challenges in converting resources into economic value. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) notes the discrepancy between Nigeria's abundant gas reserves and its lagging gas production, emphasizing the need to translate resources into economic growth.
