Ghana Backs Morocco's Autonomy Plan for Sahara Issue

Ghana has expressed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only realistic solution to the Sahara issue, aligning with a growing number of countries backing Morocco's position. This affirmation was made during talks in Accra between Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The discussions took place on Tuesday, where Bourita was co-chairing the 2nd session of the Joint Cooperation Committee with Ablakwa. Ghana welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which supports the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal.

This support from Ghana is part of a broader international momentum favoring Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Sahara, with over 20 countries opening consulates in Laayoune and Dakhla, and more than 110 UN member states endorsing the Autonomy Plan as a credible solution.
