US Backs Morocco's Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

The United States has reaffirmed its recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, reiterating support for Morocco's autonomy initiative as the most credible basis for resolving the long-standing territorial dispute. This position was communicated by U.S.

President Donald Trump in a message to King Mohammed VI of Morocco on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Morocco's Throne Day. Trump praised King Mohammed VI's leadership and described Morocco as a key partner in promoting regional peace and stability.

He emphasized the need for deeper cooperation to enhance security in the Sahel region and pledged stronger economic collaboration, directing his administration to support economic and social development in Morocco, including Western Sahara. The U.S. first recognized Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020, becoming the first major Western power to adopt this stance.

Trump's message reinforces Washington's continued backing for Morocco's autonomy proposal as the preferred framework for resolving the dispute, which has persisted since Spain's withdrawal in 1975.
