Abduljabar Adama Makes History at Commonwealth Games

Abduljabar Adama represented Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he competed in the Men’s 50m Freestyle swimming event. He finished sixth in Semifinal 2 with a time of 22.44 seconds, failing to qualify for the final.

Despite this, his achievement of reaching the semi-finals marked a significant milestone, as he became the first Nigerian swimmer to do so. Adama advanced to the semi-finals after progressing from the heats earlier in the day, being the only Nigerian swimmer to reach this stage, following teammate Clinton Opute's exit in the preliminary round.

The semi-final race was won by Australia's Jamie Jack in 21.55 seconds, with Canada’s Joshua Liendo and Australia’s Flynn Southam following. Adama's performance is viewed as a positive development for Nigerian swimming, reflecting his status as an African junior record holder.

The swimming event followed Team Nigeria's successful start in para powerlifting, where they secured three silver and three gold medals.
