Gombe Governor Advocates for State Police and Security

During a meeting of the Northern State Governors Forum (NSGF) in Abuja, Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya called for a sustained push for security and expressed support for the establishment of state police. He noted that while the security situation in northern Nigeria has shown some improvement since the last meeting in December 2025, there is no room for complacency.

Yahaya emphasized the importance of collective efforts to consolidate gains in security and highlighted the establishment of a Northern State Security Trust Fund, with some states already beginning to contribute. He urged other states to follow suit and ensure proper governance of the fund.

Yahaya reaffirmed the NSGF's support for constitutional reforms to enable state police, arguing that local solutions are necessary for Nigeria's complex security challenges, which are rooted in socio-economic issues such as poverty and unemployment. He also warned of potential farmer-herder clashes as the rainy season approaches and called for proactive measures from the federal government.
